  • Visit any Iowa DOT office or do this online: Iowa DOT Vehicle Services
  • Keep proof of cancellation for your records.

Step 6: Seller Titles the Vehicle Back

  • The seller will take the signed title and return documents to the Iowa DOT to re-title the vehicle in their name.
  • The seller pays any applicable title fees and must apply within 30 days of the return.

Step 7: Refund Process

  • After the seller receives the vehicle and verifies condition and title re-registered, the seller will issue a refund minus the agreed return fee and any mileage charges.
  • The refund method should be agreed upon in advance (cash, check, electronic).
